Gianfranco Zola full of pride to be a part of the Maestrio!

Rio Ferdinand has added the European football legend, Gianfranco Zola, to his already starlit line-up to take on Paul McStay’s Maestro team in the Maestrio charity match Sunday, 7, September 2014.gianfranco zola

The Sardinian-born is not just a legend on the small Italian island he grew up on, but across the whole football world for his skill on the ball and for those lucky enough to watch the game, we will see his brilliance again at Celtic Park,

404 Not Found Zola has signed up to play for Rio Ferdinand’s All Star team in the charity game, where the net proceeds will be split equally between the Celtic FC Foundation and the Rio Ferdinand Foundation. Monies will be primarily devoted to the work of the two charities in support of opportunities for young people in the UK, and through partners in the Middle East and South Africa.

“It is an honour and a privilege to be asked to play in this game by Rio,” said Zola. “It is exciting to line-up alongside not only Rio himself, but also players such as Marc Overmars, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, Paul McStay, Lubomir Moravcik and so many other great names.

The Chelsea legend played 628 games and scored 193 goals in a career playing for Napoli and Parma, as well as that successful seven-year spell at Chelsea.

Zola is looking forward not just to meet other legends, but also help Celtic FC Foundation and the Rio Ferdinand Foundation create opportunities for young people in Glasgow and London.

“I fully support the work that both the Rio and Celtic FC and Foundations do in working in deprived communities with the most vulnerable young people; tackling child poverty and creating opportunities for them in life,” he said. “This work is something that everyone can relate to.

“Celtic Park and the Celtic fans are well-known in the football world for creating such a special atmosphere, so it will be a great occasion.”
