Monday 13th March 2017 at TNG Youth & Community Centre
Today Rio Ferdinand Foundation hosted our R5 Awards Showcase, alongside one of our key partners in the London borough of Lewisham, Youth First. Held at the award winning ‘The New Generation Community Centre’ (TNG), a selected group of young leaders were recognised and celebrated for their commitment to being at the forefront of social action initiatives, and taking part in programmes to boost their prospects.
Hanna Dimtsu, a member of the Foundation’s youth forum welcomed guests and introduced three spectacular acts to the stage to showcase spoken word, singing, and dance performances, whilst Rio Ferdinand watched in the audience
Ibrahim Kanu, and Ade Akande, both ambassadors of the Rio Ferdinand Foundation, spoke about how they grew up in and around estates known for their high levels of gang-related crime, territorialism, drug dealing and mass unemployment. Through the help of the Foundation, they changed their lives for the better and are now working with the next generation of young people.
After awarding the young people with certificates for their achievements, and selfies with Rio, the afternoon concluded with a Q&A. Rio spoke about his inspirations and role models as a child, and how he had to work hard to be successful in his career.
Our Patron Rio Ferdinand said:
“Coming to these showcases, seeing all the talent out there and how hard young people are working, makes me know that everything I am doing here at the Foundation is worth it, these guys are inspiring.”
One young person said:
“I don’t know where I would have been without their help and support – I would probably be on the streets”
