Sheldon took part in our National Lottery funded Inspiring Youth Leaders programme which supports young people to realise their ambitions and run their own projects. For his project he decided he wanted to gain coaching experience in boxing. The sport had been a hobby of his for some time but he wanted to develop his skills.
We caught up with Sheldon at Eccles Boxing School to see how he was getting on in his coaching sessions…
Sheldon now teaches a group of 8-14 year olds boxing – which he says are his favourite age group to teach. We talked about how he has become a community role model for the younger generation by inspiring others to continue boxing.
We asked about his role models and who has inspired him. He said “Conor McGregor is my favourite fighter. I like how he mixes striking/jabbing. I’m now joining Swinton MMA.”
We asked whether he stays up into the hours of the early morning to watch fights. He said, “I stay up to 3am to watch the fights aired in the US but I regularly go to matches in the UK”
Although it’s not just international stars Sheldon is inspired by. He has also received encouragement and mentorship from Byron at Eccles Boxing School, who has been a key figure in his development.
We asked Sheldon what his next steps are now. He said, “I hope to turn my hobby of boxing into a career. I aim to teach someone from beginner to a pro”
Sheldon said “I think everyone should try to take what they love and turn it into a career and would recommend RFF’s programmes to anyone… I’ve gained experience in teaching sports, and feel more confidence in applying for sports leaders jobs.”
