Connecting Communities, a story of unity
When I joined the Rio Ferdinand Foundation in 2023 as Director of Operations, did I imagine my role would take me to South Africa? Absolutely not, but it has been a privilege to see the Foundation's expertise as a community connector grow into new territories in the last year.
As a Foundation, we are committed to empowering social mobility and driving social justice. During my 11 months in post, I have relished the opportunity to work in the heart of the most under-resourced communities, developing partnerships and pathways that create opportunities for young people.
Landing in South Africa earlier this month, a country with huge economic and social challenges, I could feel a deep-rooted palatable sense of community. Despite it being ten years ago, Nelson Mandela’s, unifying legacy runs deep in South Africa and is reflected in the spirit and resilience of the community and the overwhelming positivity and ambition of partners to move things forward.
As a nation in the wake of rioting and dispute, there is much we can learn.
Melissa and Edilson delivered the Foundation's leadership programme, and I was impressed by their ability to immediately engage. Equally impressive was the motivation, commitment, and inspiring reception of the students from Junction Rovers.
When discussing community leadership, Abdul, a participant in the session, who is already making a significant contribution to his community whilst trying to make ends meet, answered, "Who else, if not us." This stuck with me.
During the trip, I valued the opportunity to spend time with the legend Joseph Boysoon. I learnt of the club's story, a story of a community that spans the Apartheid era and a process of reconciliation and transformation—nation-building, if you like—to today's focus, which is clearly on powering the potential of young people and creating opportunities for the next generation of leaders.
As I settle back into the London office, I reflect on what was a fantastic experience, and I thank Junction Rovers, ETA, Rygate FC, and Cape Town University for their welcome. Moreover, I look forward with enthusiasm to the next chapter of this story of collaboration, one that sees the sports industry and corporate sector partners work together to develop sustainable grassroots models of community development.
A collective vision to create opportunities for young people and give hope for a brighter future.
